A Review of I Can Only Imagine from The Sovereign
I’m a fan of historical and futuristic movies. So, recommending a movie in a contemporary setting is uncommon for me. That said, I highly recommend I Can Only Imagine, the true story of Bart Willard (of the band, MercyMe) and the origins of his popular song. The movie did better than expected on opening weekend. According to the band’s website, “I Can Only Imagine, … the movie based on the life of MercyMe frontman, Bart Millard, …shattered pre-weekend tracking expectations to become No. 3 at the box-office [opening] weekend and the No. 1 faith-based movie of 2018.”
As Bart, John Michael Finley’s voice is amazing (he was the understudy to Jean Val Jean in Les Miserables on Broadway in 2015). The acting is great, especially with the contribution of Dennis Quaid as Bart’s abusive father. Bart wrote his mega-hit song after the loss of his father to cancer.
In the movie, Bart explains, “My dad was a monster and I saw God transform him from the man that I hated into the man that I wanted to become, so I wrote this for my dad.”
That’s where I’ll end with the spoilers!
God transforms people as He promises in Ezekiel 36:26 (NIV):
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”
What Dennis Quaid Says about I Can Only Imagine
In the following interview, Dennis Quaid shares about his faith, about his mother, and about the movie. He says, “I’ve done a lot of father-son stories. This was different in a way because I think the story was really one from the heart.”
