Earthquakes in the News

Increasing numbers of earthquakes are one of the signs of Christ’s return. In light of that, are you aware of the three major earthquakes of the last few days?

A Thursday 6.4 quake near Kumamoto, Japan, was followed on Saturday by an earthquake almost ten times stronger, a 7.3. This BBC article thoroughly covers the details.

Unrelated, but closely following the Kumamoto, Japan, quakes, a 7.8 earthquake also rocked Ecuador on Saturday, on the coast north of Quito. An article from MSN News covers this major earthquake.

To give you an idea of the power of major earthquakes, the major earthquakes in Nepal in April of 2015 shifted Mount Everest 3 cm southwest.

An Increase in Earthquakes

Jesus answered a question in Matthew 24: 3 – 8 (ESV), mentioning earthquakes, as well as wars and famine, as increasing signs of His return:

As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” And Jesus answered them,“See that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.

The following graph, from an article by, visualizes the dramatic increase in strong earthquakes. I highly recommend this article to look at the data from different angles. This graph and several very useful graphs are all explained.
