Prayer: the 21 Coptic Christian Martyrs

Coptic Martyrs

Then I saw thrones, and sitting on them were those who had been given the right to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony about Jesus, for proclaiming the Word of God, and … They had come to life again and now they reigned with Christ for a thousand years. ~ Revelation 20:4 NLT

The world reels with the news of 21 Egyptians martyred at the hands of ISIS. Their crime? They were Coptic Christians.

If you would be encouraged to learn what God tells us about persecution and martyrdom, I recommend your read a post by Tom Schreiner: A Biblical Meditation on the ISIS Execution of 21 Christians. Perhaps this will help you know how to pray.

The author shares more than a dozen Bible verses explaining that Jesus warned us to expect persecution, but to pray for our enemies. We also pray for our suffering brothers and sisters in Christ and grieve with them, pleading for God’s promised judgment of injustice. God also has assured us that we are more than conquerors.

I’m not elaborating in this post so you can go to Tom Schreiner’s article and mediate on the Scriptures he’s offered there. He also has a list of the martyrs names, which I’ll include here for you.
