Rev. Fred Luter, Jr., senior pastor of the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, was elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention on June 19th, 2012.

Pastor Luter is a very capable leader. When he began serving at Franklin Avenue Baptist in 1986, they had 65 members.  The congregation was 7000 members strong when Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.

I recommend Karen Yates’ blog post, Finding Rest: Southern Baptists Elect 1st Black President and Why I Care, for a brief look at Southern Baptist history and why this election is so momentous.
