Many references to sand in the Bible are metaphors for ‘innumerable,” such as God’s promise to Abraham that his descendants would be “like the sand on the seashore”. This promise was first made when Abraham was about to offer up his son, Isaac. God has faithfully kept his promise to multiply Abraham’s descendants who are as unique as these grains of sand.
After seeing the images at sandgrains.com, I appreciate how unique grains of sand can be, which gives a little more color to this passage:
How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
They cannot be numbered!
I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up, you are still with me!
~ Psalm 139: 17 – 18 NLT
God’s loving thoughts toward us are as unique and numerous as these grains of sand.
