God Moves Mountains in Japan

I was amazed to learn that the entire island of Honshu moved eight feet closer to the United States during the recent earthquake and tsunami. The earth also shifted on its axis. Read more.

To give you some perspective: “The island is roughly 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) long and ranges from 50 to 230 km (31 to 140 mi) wide, and its total area is 227,962.59 km2 (88,016.85 sq mi), 60% of the total area of Japan. It is larger than Great Britain, and slightly larger than the state of Minnesota. Its area has been expanding with land reclamation and coastal uplift in the north, but global sea level rise has diminished these effects. Honshu has 5,450 kilometres (3,386 mi) of coastline.” (from Wikipedia)

When I learned about the island moving, I thought about various Scriptures where we learn that God moves mountains, as in Job 9: 4 – 6:

“For God is so wise and so mighty.
Who has ever challenged him successfully?
Without warning, he moves the mountains,
overturning them in his anger.
He shakes the earth from its place,
and its foundations tremble.

Honshu is mountainous; its highest mountain is the volcano, Mount Fuji, at 3,776 m (12,388 ft). So, I don’t know how many mountains are on Honshu, but God moved them all at once. Apparently moving them eight feet in two minutes!

As horrendous as the 9.0 earthquake was in Japan, God warns us in Revelation 16: 17 – 21 that an even larger earthquake is coming:

“Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air. And a mighty shout came from the throne in the Temple, saying, ‘It is finished!’ Then the thunder crashed and rolled, and lightning flashed. And a great earthquake struck—the worst since people were placed on the earth. The great city of Babylon split into three sections, and the cities of many nations fell into heaps of rubble. So God remembered all of Babylon’s sins, and he made her drink the cup that was filled with the wine of his fierce wrath. And every island disappeared, and all the mountains were leveled. There was a terrible hailstorm, and hailstones weighing seventy-five pounds fell from the sky onto the people below. They cursed God because of the terrible plague of the hailstorm.”
